Learn The Science Behind Sports At Discovery Science Center

May 2, 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Due to popular demand, Discovery Science Center is extending its "Team Up! Explore Science & Sports" exhibit through May 19! "Team Up! Explore Science & Sports" is an exciting hands-on exhibit that gives visitors an in-depth look at the many scientific principles necessary in athletics.

The exhibit allows visitors to discover how fast their fastball is, how different floor surfaces affect their performance, how to make the perfect bounce pass, and much more. Children, families and groups alike are invited to visit Discovery Science Center today, to check out the fun and fascination that is involved in becoming a winning athlete.

Over 10,000 people have visited Team Up! at Discovery Science Center since it opened this past January. "This has been a very popular exhibit because visitors can test their own skills in sports like basketball, football, baseball, tennis, soccer and even extreme sports like snowboarding," said Annette Geiselman, Executive Director. "We're fortunate to be able to hold this exhibit over an extra month."

Geiselman added that visitors have been amazed at the level of science that is involved in sports. The exhibit explains geometry, physics, force and friction to children in a way that is intriguing and relative to sport.

"Team Up! Explore Science & Sports" was developed by the Discovery Center Museum of Rockford, IL and the Family Museum of Arts and Science of Bettendorf, IA. Funding was provided through a TEAMS II grant by the National Science Foundation, with additional support provided by the Scott County Regional Authority, The Riverboat Development Authority and local sponsors.

"Team UP! Explore Science & Sports" is sure to bring fun, fascination and fact to everyone who accepts the challenges it poses.
