Science Lab Descriptions

Kindergarten through Grade 3

Be a Bug!
Discover what it's like to see, feel, and walk like a real resident of Bugville! Use your senses in new ways to find out how insects, spiders and other bugs protect themselves and find food to eat. Meet some of Discovery Center's live bugs up close and personal!

Animal Exploration
Meet Discovery Science Center's animals, from the tarantulas to the ball python! Even though animals fit into different family groups, they are all important and connected to everything else...including us! Explore the different animals through hands-on introductions, and learn about their bodies, habitats, and what they eat.

Magnetic Force
Experience the push and pull of magnets! Do magnets work through solid objects? What kinds of things are attracted to magnets? Are all magnets the same? The force will be with you in these fun, hands-on activities.

Wacky Weather
From tornadoes to thunderstorms, weather can be wacky! Watch clouds form, make it rain, and create a tornado–right in the classroom! Explore the many facets of weather and learn safety precautions.

Grades 4-6

It's a Bug's World
Investigate the weird world of bugs in even more detail! Classify the different families of bugs, learn about their digestion, body parts, and senses, and see some of the Bugville residents on a more personal level.

Animal Exploration
Meet Discovery Science Center's live animals face to face! Learn firsthand how animals fit into different classifications, plus fun information about their habitats and where they belong in the food chain. Explore the characteristics that place animals in different classifications.

Human Body —: From the Inside Out!
Journey into the human body to take a broad look at how our bodies work! From bones to guts, explore our body systems, including the digestive system. What a marvelous machine we live in!

Seeing Sight
Vision may seem complicated, but it is simpler than you think! Discover how the parts of an eyeball work together by dissecting a cow eye. (Safety note: we will be using dissecting kits)
• Additional materials fee applies ($10.00 per class)
• Must sign up for this lab at least two weeks in advance

Electrify
Investigate the invisible force that turns on a lightbulb, including the difference between a series and a parallel circuit. Watch a battery dissection and look carefully at each part to discover what makes electric current work. Let this lab spark your sense of discovery!

What's the Matter?
What is the difference between matter and energy? How does energy affect matter? Through hands-on experiments and fun demonstrations, thinking about matter and energy will never be the same again.

Balancing Act
What is the secret force that pulls everything back to earth? And how does the center of gravity affect the way life balances out? Do your own balancing act through fun experiments and activities using the scientific method. Explore the mighty force of gravity that keeps us all centered.

Electric Skies and Wacky Weather
Weather can be wild, especially in Colorado! Make your own weather in the classroom and explore the extreme side of weather in the Rockies, including the Rain Shadow Effect, Chinook winds, and the Gulf Stream.
